FACULTY OF ALLIED HEALTH SCIENCES

Message
Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (AHS) in the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) started its journey in 2013, created around the nucleus formed by the Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences (BIHS). TIt was founded by the world-renowned organization Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS). Allied Health Sciences (AHS) at university level resembles the analogy of human body which functions through a number of major systems. The more synchronized way the interrelated systems function within and among the system(s) the better the health. ... In case of a health science university, allied health science subjects such as Health Informatics, Biostatistics, Health Economics, Information & Communication Technology, etc. act as a catalyst to make the health science education more effective. It is now widely recognized that health service delivery is a team effort involving both doctors and non-physicians such as nurses and technologist The field of AHS encompasses a broad range of health professionals who provide medical services to support physicians in overall patient care. Inadequacy or low importance attached to these allied disciplines is bound to force the entire efforts ineffective which the nation will be unable to bear. The role of allied health workers in providing effective care has become critical with diagnosis based on technology. Professionals that can competently handle sophisticated machinery and advanced protocols are now in high demand. Allied Health professionals work across a variety of settings from hospitals and community settings to laboratories and research institutions. As part of an interdisciplinary team, they seek to prevent, diagnose, treat and educate patients on illness and disease. In addition, healthcare administration and health systems management are important components of Allied Health. Allied Health professionals make a difference in patients’ lives every day. Realizing the importance of AHS professionals in the entire health workforce of the country, BUHS formed the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences with a steadfast focus on educating and advising students, conducting innovative research and engaging with communities throughout the country and to contribute to a global society to improve health and wellnes. We aim to blend the three vital elements of education that is teaching, training and research to fulfill the ultimate responsibilities of a higher center of learning with a purpose to prepare leaders for a broad range of health-related professionals. Through our research initiatives and professional training programs, we are out in communities addressing the health needs of individuals in the country. Prof. Dr. Pradip Sen Gupta

Contrary to popular notion in our society health is not an issue only for the physicians but its development needs a concerted effort of professionals from basic, clinical and social sciences. In line with this concept, generation of human resources in health should not be treated merely from teaching and training points of views; research should also be equally emphasized in this venture as evidences based on geographical, environmental, ethnic and sociocultural background are a prerequisite for rational and cost-effective health care delivery in a population. Based on an internationally recognized research tradition at BIRDEM and BIHS which, in turn, are rooted in the long-term dream of Late National Professor Dr M Ibrahim, the present University aims to blend the three vital elements (teaching, training and research) of education to fulfill the ultimate responsibilities (knowledge dissemination and knowledge generation) of a higher centre of learning. With this aim Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) has started its journey with full-time non-practicing (or institutionally practicing) faculty members and a number of highly reputed guest faculties and collaborating partners from all over the world. In public health, BUHS has taken a discipline-wise subspecialty approach which fits more with the present volume of knowledge and technological advancement in the area.We believe that studying in BUHS will be a pleasant and productive experience. Welcome to the BUHS Family!
