Undergraduate Program

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs):

BS in Biochemistry and Cell Biology program describe accomplishments that graduates are expected to attain within two years after graduation.

  • Will be able to comprehend the basics of the vital processes in living systems and apply it professionally in the field of biological sciences with respect to environmental and economic issues.
  • Will enable graduates to design, experiment, analyze, and interpret modern notions in Biochemistry with the help of other multi-disciplinary concepts.
  • Will be able to pursue career in academia, research as well as in industry.
  • To facilitate, motivate and promote technical skills in the core areas of biological sciences with advanced practical knowledge in basic tools and technologies.

Description of the program

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology was established in 2010 and the program has been established in 2013. The department involves both research and academic activities. Multidisciplinary knowledge like Physics, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Plant Biochemistry, Nutritional Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Protein Engineering, Enzymology, Chemistry of Natural Products, Microbiology, Clinical Biochemistry and Computer Science are acquired in this department. The department is conducting a 4 years BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program. Majors have the opportunity through extensive coursework, Laboratories, Seminars and several projects to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workforce or to go on with further graduate education leading to MS or PhD degree in Biochemistry or related discipline at home and abroad. The departmental faculties are involved in various research programs in the world. They also take part regularly in the National/International seminar/ symposium and workshops.The BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program conducted on a Course & Credit based structure with 46 numbers of Courses to be dispensed in 160 credits in total.

The BS BCB (Honors) Program will be conducted on a Course & Credit based structure with 46 number of Courses to be dispensed in 3550 Credit Hours in total for 160 credit, completed in a minimum time span of 4 years.

  • Make the students able to demonstrate high level analytical and critical thinking skills to solve problems in Microbiology through the application of fundamental knowledge in major of Microbiology

  • Help the students to acquire the basic tools needed to carry out research in Microbiology independently and in team.
  • To enhance the skill of communicating scientific results effectively in written, oral and in an interactive presentation.

The Department of Microbiology was established in 2012 and the program has been established in 2013. The Department is involved in both research and academic activities. The Department is conducting a 4 years BSc (Honors) course. Description of the program

The department is conducting a 2 years MS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology program. This program includes extensive coursework, Laboratories, Seminars, several projects and thesis to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workforce or to go on with further higher education leading to PhD degree in Biochemistry or related discipline at home and abroad. The MS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Program will be conducted on a Course & Credit based structure with 16 number of Courses to be dispensed in 1596 Credit Hours in total for 70 credits thesis group and 18 number of Courses to be dispensed in 1542 Credit Hours in total for 70 credits non thesis group, completed in a minimum time span of 18 months.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs):

  • Help the students to conceptualize the basic, in-depth and updated knowledge in different fields of Immunology in respect of theories, principles/techniques, and methodologies relating to other relevant specialties of biological science.
  • Enable students to be efficient with high-level of critical thinking and analytical skills in different immunological methods on both theoretical and practical aspects to solve conceptual and quantitative problems in immunology by applying fundamental principles of advanced immunological techniques.
  • Competent to demonstrate safe and acceptable skills in laboratory procedures and experimental design that would meet criteria of a good laboratory practice (GLP).
  • Help the students acquire leadership to plan, design and implement research by addressing different immunological issues and acquire knowledge of using essential tools needed to carry out biomedical research independently and / in team.
  • To enhance the skill of interpreting and communicating scientific concepts, experimental results and analytical data clearly and concisely with the appropriate bodies through written, oral, and interactive presentations.
  • Help students develop curiosity and interest in making scientific investigations to enrich their personal integrity and realize the roles of immunologist in health sectors nationally and globally.
  • Acquaint students with moral and ethical values to handle the laboratory analysis, results and research findings, maintaining the secrecy of internal policy and keeping dignity of patriotism.

Description of the program

The MS in Immunology has been introduced in Bangladesh University of Health Sciences as a flagship program since its inception with an aim to provide the students with a broad understanding of the complex field of immunology. It is a progressively demanding program among medical graduates and biomedical scientists globally. The MS in immunology program is a full-time, being conducted on a course and credit-based structure specifically divided into different integrated courses (21 courses for thesis group) and (22 courses for non-thesis group) that are accommodated in a total of 70 credits, completed in a minimum period of 18 months.
Forty credits of the total contents of the program encompass basic immunology, clinical immunology & immunogenetics, emerging infections, immunopathologic principles; (e.g, hypersensitivity, tumor immunology, autoimmunity), molecular virology & oncology, transplantation immunology, vaccinology, cell culture & stem cell biology, immunological diagnosis using advanced techniques and immunotherapy. Rest 30 credits of the program include basics of biostatics, advance lab biosafety, animal experimentation, bioinformatics, research methodology, bioethics, microbial biotechnology, genetic engineering, lab management, enzyme and protein biotechnology, advanced molecular biology, transfusion medicine. Immunological principles included in the program are being used extensively in the field of diagnosis as well as prognosis of a disease. MS in Immunology is a fully research- based program. Only and first Master Program in Bangladesh open for both the Medical /non-medical Graduates.

Credits and Duration

70 credits divided into 21 and 22 different integrated courses for thesis and non-thesis groups respectively; Duration of the program is 18 months (minimum). Once admitted registration of a student remains valid up to 3 years maximum. After three years, re-registration is needed to continue studentship.

Admission Eligibility

Honor’s in Microbiology and Immunology, Biochemistry, Lab Technology or its equivalents from any recognized University; MBBS or equivalent degree from any Medical college recognized by BMDC; foreign students with equivalent qualifications are also eligible for admission. Minimum CGPA in Honor’s program must be 2.5 for admission in MS in Immunology.

Nutrition (CN) was first introduced under the Public Health Division in 2013. This Bachelor’s program provides comprehensive education for helping individuals and groups develop healthy eating habits to promote wellness and prevent disease. Through extensive coursework, field works, seminars, and several projects, students have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workforce or go on with further higher education at home and abroad.

This Program will be conducted on a Course & Credit based structure with 48 number of Courses to be dispensed in 160 Credits in total, completed in a minimum time span of 4 years.

Program Educational Objectives (PEOs):

  • To explain different terms and issues related to occupational and Environmental health and safety, focused to human health and natural sciences, and human behavior with an understanding of the environment, workplace and occupational and environmental health.
  • To impart knowledge and skill for the environment and environmental systems, the impact of human on the environment and environmental impacts on human, the importance of environmental safety when making technical, economic, political and other policy choices.
  • To provide knowledge and skill for the safety in workplaces, to identify hazardous situations and health problems due to occupational exposures and to identify occupational and work-related health problems in different workplaces and recognize the importance of socio-economic factors for healthy work practice when making technical, economic, political and other policy choices.

The Bachelor of Public Health (BPH) in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (Hon’s) is a 4 years course. The program have the opportunity through extensive coursework, laboratory works, hands on training on relevant fields, academic field visit in various industries & places related to important occupational and environmental issues. Seminars and several projects to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workforce or to go on with further graduate education leading to MPH degree in Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety or related discipline at home and abroad.

Description of the program

Since 2008, the Department of Epidemiology has started its journey at Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences. Later on this department shifted under the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences since the inception of BUHS. Presently the department offers the Bachelor program (BPH in Epidemiology & Biostatistics) jointly with the Department of Biostatistics under the Faculty of Public Health. Bachelor Program consists of 160 credits with 4 years of duration (eight semesters). There are a huge range of activities of the department which includes investigation and control of disease outbreaks, determination of the health needs of the populations, and evaluation of effectiveness of health services. Out of 48 courses taught in this program students have extensive exposure to statistical tools and analysis through attending 16 courses from the Department of Biostatistics

The course is consisting of theoretical classes, practical including field visits, community and clinical attachments, seminar and workshops. Student will design a project at the end of the course.

Reproductive and child health covers the spectrum of sexual and reproductive health issues of women, men, adolescents as well as health issues of children. The life course approach recognizes the impact of health of women during reproductive years on the wellbeing of women, newborn and children. Decision-making, providing or accessing essential healthcare for women and children are frequently linked with gender issues. The program introduces and expands into critical thinking on sexual, reproductive and child health issues by students. Identifying priorities of sexual and reproductive health of men, women, adolescents and children are at the heart of developing an accessible and affordable healthcare system. The program helps the students to develop knowledge, attitude and skills to contribute towards improving reproductive and child health issues.

The program Master of Public Health (MPH) in Community Nutrition (CN) was started under the Public Health Division in 2013. The MPH in CN is a research-focused program for those seeking an advanced degree in community nutrition. The program promotes nutritional health and disease prevention in communities with an emphasis on vulnerable populations. The MPH (CN) is a 70-credit research-focused master’s program for those seeking an advanced degree in community nutrition. This includes core courses in introduction to public health, epidemiology, biostatistics, research methodology & bioethics, occupational & environmental health, reproductive and child health and health promotion & health education, as well as elective courses including dietetics & therapeutic nutrition, nutrition in the life cycle, nutritional assessment, nutritional policies, and programs, food security, safety and quality, applied nutrition, advanced nutrition, community-based management of malnutrition and research.

Description of the program

The postgraduate program in NCD started its journey in the year 2007 with a vision to develop skilled manpower in the field of chronic diseases. Initially the 2-year Master Program was started under the Department of Community Medicine with Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences (BIHS) under the University of Dhaka. Later the program was operated under BSMMU and from 2013 under the University BUHS. Currently the Master Program (MPH in NCD) is ongoing under the Department of NCD since 2015. This is the first MPH Program in South-East Asian Region solely on NCD. This program includes the basic concept on major NCDs and their risk factors along with the disease burden, risk assessment, screening of NCDs, health system management and global health in perspective of NCDs. Also includes the gender, environmental and nutritional issues related to NCDs and NCDs in high risk group. Prevention strategies of chronic diseases at low resource settings are taught in this program.

Community Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with the health of populations. It strives to protect and promote the health and well-being of the community through the Primary Health Care approach. Health needs of populations are measured and appropriate strategies are developed to improve the health status of the community through health promotion, disease prevention and health protection. Students of this subject will have to apply the knowledge they have gained in several areas of medicine for the benefit of the community. They are taught the preventive, curative and promotive aspects of every illness become familiar with the tools available for implementation including health communications and informatics, applications of social and behavioral sciences, and health policy, law and ethics. Description of the program

The program aims to prepare specialist Biostatisticians capable of appropriately using statistical methods in the field of health sciences including Public Health and Medicine. The graduates are expected to be able to conduct research and provide necessary assistance in policy formulation, planning of health services & care and program evaluations for decision making. They should also be able to function as teachers, trainers and consultants.

Honours in Statistics/Mathematics, Biological sciences, Social sciences, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, other disciplines with exposure to basic statistics at graduation level;Graduates in Health care or Biomedicine (MBBS, BDS or its equivalent recognized by the BMDC plus one year in service training) from any recognized university in Bangladesh; Foreign students with equivalent qualifications.   • Help the students to conceptualize the basic knowledge, theories, principles/techniques, processes, methods and procedures of the main areas of Medical Laboratory Science: Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Pathology, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Molecular Diagnostic, Laboratory Biosafety, Physiology; Pharmaceutical, Analytical and Biomedical Research laboratories.
  • Make the students able to demonstrate high-level analytical and critical thinking skills to solve conceptual and quantitative problems in laboratory sciences by applying fundamental principles in various analytical laboratories.
  • Develop the skill to demonstrate safe and acceptable skills in laboratory procedures and experimental design.
  • Help the students to acquire the essential tools needed to carry out biomedical research independently and in team.
  • To enhance the skill of interpreting and communicating laboratory and scientific results effectively in written, oral, and interactive presentations.

Description of the program

The Department of Applied Laboratory Sciences was established in 2012 and the program was established in 2013. The Department is involved in both research and academic activities. In addition to Laboratory Technology, multi-disciplinary knowledge like Physics, History of emergence of independent Bangladesh, Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Analytical Techniques and Instrumentations, other Laboratory sciences based courses, Molecular Biology, Quality Control, Transfusion Medicine, Laboratory Biosafety, Biostatistics and Computer Science are also provided in this Department. The Department is conducting a 4 years BSc (Honors) program. Majors will have the opportunity through extensive coursework, Laboratories (hospital attachment), Seminars and Several projects to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the workforce or to go on with further graduate education.

Biomedical Engineering combines engineering, medicine and biology to improve the quality of our lives by resolving challenges in the healthcare industry. Bioengineers are an interesting breed.
