  • The Department aims to provide under-grade and post-grade level students with an opportunity to learn the economic concepts and tools used in the healthcare field and build competitive knowledge that can be applied in practice at their future jobs.
  • A compulsory course entitled ‘Basics of Health Economics’ is taught by the Department of Health Economics to students in undergrad and postgrad. The Department also conducts extensive research work with a national and international focus, the experiences of which are incorporated into teaching.
  • The Department, in cooperation with students, conducts research in a wide variety of healthcare fields. Research areas cover the following; universal health coverage, health policy, insurance, financing and management; disease burden, and quality of life studies in a wide variety of disease areas.

Department of Health Economics sets off its journey in 2013 under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences aiming at conducting teaching and research. Notably, the study of health economics focuses on the economic behavior of individuals; providers; insurers; and international, governments and actors as their actions affect health and medical care. This includes financing health care, provider payment systems, and restructuring health systems. In this era of sustainable development goals (SDGs), health economics plays a crucial role in achieving universal health coverage across Bangladesh with a robust health system.
