Faculty of Basic Sciences at Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) is committed to scholarly excellence and student success in the field of Biological Sciences. This vision is to not only prepare undergraduate and postgraduate students for future success in life by offering a variety of up-to-date biological courses, but also to assist them in developing a rigorous scientific attitude so that they can best serve health- related professions and improve people’s quality of life. This also correlates with the aim of BUHS.
This faculty consists of seven departments (Biochemistry, Chemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Physiology, Immunology, Pharmacology and Pathology) and each year we offer 4 years of BSc course (Honors) (Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Microbiology) & 1.5 years MS courses (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Immunology). Each department possesses cutting-edge laboratories and the latest equipments. Additionaly this faculty has an Animal House maintained by the department of Pharmacology, which is a rare opportunity in the context of educational institutions of Bangladesh. Animal experimentation course is being taught in pharmacology department and laboratory animals are essential for the quality teaching of this course. Moreover, it is utmost important to the quality of research data and or testing programs in which animals are used. Undergraduate and Postgraduate students by using Animal house facilities can develop their skills necessary to enter the workforce or they can pursue further higher education leading to PhD in the related fields at home and abroad.
The curricula of the programs has been articulated in accordance with the guidelines provided by the University Grand Commission and we are trying to make the programs accredited by the Bangladesh Accreditation Council. Our highly qualified and experienced faculty members are dedicated to instilling a sense of responsibility in students and encouraging them to engage in a critical exchange of innovative ideas across their scholarly boundaries, with an emphasis on fostering creativity and ethics. We place great emphasis on academic excellence by providing outcome-based education and focusing on the development of student’s skills, not just their cognitive understanding of the subject area. Our commitment to innovation creates a culture that nurtures community and promotes the talents of our scholars. As Dean of the faculty of Basic Sciences, my aim is to improve the already significant opportunities available for our graduate and post graduate students to create new knowledge, prepare for careers inside and outside the country and address the evolving needs of society. The graduate program and research are major priorities for BUHS. We are deeply committed to the work we do in broadening participation in higher education that leads to a more diverse and inclusive scholarly community. Whether you are looking to get admission or presently here on campus, I do believe that you will make the most of opportunities to expand your knowledge in the fields you are interested.
