Mission of The University:

To develop skilled, innovative and inquisitive human resources to meet the demand of the nation who will contribute towards the development of health of the community that they will live in.

VISION OF THE UNIVERSITY:

  • To develop competent health science graduates with human values and social responsibilities contributing for sustainable development of health sector.
  • To reinforce the theoretical, practical and ethical dimensions of the learning process by nurturing a culture of research and innovation among faculty members and students.
  • To promote collaboration among relevant Institutes/Universities in home and abroad for research, academic exchange, curriculum and its hands-on implementation.
  • To create multidisciplinary environment in biomedical research involving biological, social sciences as well as information technology as relevant to health.
  • To generate evidence-based suggestions which can help the planners and policy makers to develop better health care programs in the country.

History of BUHS:

National Professor Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim

Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) was established in mid-2012 with one of the aims of upholding the philanthropic philosophy of National Professor Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, Founder of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS). The University is the first ever private university in Bangladesh specialized in health sciences education originated with inherent values for innovative approach to promote quality education leading to prepare time-befitted health professionals for under taking responsibilities for universal humanitarian services.

The dream of the foundation of the specialized university for new generation came into reality with the patronization of the Government by the allocation of spacious land in Mirpur, Dhaka and subsequently in benevolence of the Health Care Development Project (HCDP), a Bangladesh-Netherlands joint collaboration project for the establishment of Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences and Hospital (BIHS), the predecessor of the University (BUHS) conducted MPhil and MPH programs in the public health disciplines, MS in Laboratory Technology and MHI in Health Informatics over a five years period with dedicated faculty members of BIRDEM and other reputed academies. The Institute launched the programs under University of Dhaka and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) with support from the Norwegian Institute of Master Studies (NOMA), Norway and the Rockefeller Foundation, USA.

National Professor AK Azad Khan

National Professor A K Azad Khan, President of BADAS and Chairman, Board of Trustees of BUHS, has tremendously contributed to the establishment of the University, as a vanguard. He has been extending intellectual efforts and other necessary supports to flourish the University as a center of international excellence. Prof. Dr. Faridul Alam, after taking the helm of the University as the second Vice-Chancellor, has made rapid improvements of the University within a short period with his pragmatic leadership and proven academic excellence as a physician, as a researcher and as a academician in the health sector.

Contrary to popular notion in our society health is not an issue only for the physicians but its development needs a concerted effort of professionals from basic, clinical and social sciences. In line with this concept, generation of human resources in health should not be treated merely from teaching and training points of views; research should also be equally emphasized in this venture as evidences based on geographical, environmental, ethnic and sociocultural background are a prerequisite for rational and cost-effective health care delivery in a population. Based on an internationally recognized research tradition at BIRDEM and BIHS which, in turn, are rooted in the long-term dream of Late National Professor Dr M Ibrahim, the present University aims to blend the three vital elements (teaching, training and research) of education to fulfill the ultimate responsibilities (knowledge dissemination and knowledge generation) of a higher centre of learning. With this aim Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) has started its journey with full-time non-practicing (or institutionally practicing) faculty members and a number of highly reputed guest faculties and collaborating partners from all over the world. In public health, BUHS has taken a discipline-wise subspecialty approach which fits more with the present volume of knowledge and technological advancement in the area.We believe that studying in BUHS will be a pleasant and productive experience.
