USTM delegates visit BUHS

A delegation from the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya visited Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) on May 11-14, 2016. A team of 30 members comprising academicians and researchers led by Mr. Mahbubul Hoque, President, ERD Foundation and Chancellor of the University. They also attended various programs at BIRDEM and the University of Dhaka during the period.

 

Prof Liaquat Ali, Vice-Chancellor of BUHS welcomed the delegates at the campus, a discussion meeting on institutional collaborations was held in the academic bhaban of the University. Prof AK Azad Khan, Chairman, Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS) expressed his warm greetings to the delegates while Treasurer, Deans of all faculties and senior faculty members of the University were present in the meeting.

 

 

 

BUHS organized a Round Table Discussion on ‘Higher Education and Research in the Perspective of North-Eastern Indian and Bangladesh in its Ibrahim Auditorium on that day. Prof PG Rao, Vice Chancellor of USTM presented the key note paper. In his presentation he focused on ongoing education system of the region and sought a unique system of higher education where students of the regions had smooth excess to any University for education and research purposes.      

 

 

Mr. Hoque put emphasis on strengthening bilateral collaborations with BUHS for the promotion of education and research between both Universities. Prof Ali highly admired the initiatives of the ERD Foundation and its pioneer Mr. Hoque for the tremendous contribution in enhancement of higher education in India’s North-East region.                                                                                                    

 

They also paid a visit to the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh. Prof AK Azad Khan, Chairman and Mr. M Sayef Uddin, Secretary General of BADAS welcomed greeted the delegates. Mr. Sayef Uddin gave a brief history of the BIRDEM, and its tremendous contributions to diabetic health care for the people of Bangladesh. Mr. Hoque admired the life-long visionary dedication of Prof Mohammad Ibrahim, founder of BIRDEM and the international recognition of the humanitarian organization as a centre of excellence. 

 

 

In the afternoon the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Dhaka as part of developing mutual academic collaborations among the Universities. Mr. Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor, USTM and Prof (Dr.) AAMS Arefin Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University signed the MoU from respective parts. Prof Liaquat Ali, Vice-Chancellor of BUHS and Prof (Dr.) P G Rao, Vice Chancellor of USTM were among others present on the occasion.

Prof AAMS Arefin Siddiqui said that the signing of MoU between the Universities would open new horizon in the promotion of higher education and research of the regions and future generation would be highly benefited by the initiatives to be taken by both parts. Mr. Hoque expressed his firm determination in developing education and research by collective strengths and efforts. 

 

A Round Table Discussion on ‘Higher Education and Research in the perspective of India’s North East and Bangladesh’ was jointly organized by BUHS and the USTM which was held at the Centre of Excellence of Dhaka University on 12 May 2016. The Session was co-chaired by Prof Mesbahuddin Ahmad, President of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences and Vice-Chancellor of Gono Biswabiddyalaya. Around 60 eminent academicians of the country were present in the program. The Key Note Paper in the Session was presented by Prof Dr PG Rao, Vice Chancellor of USTM.

 

Prof Rao in his presentation gave an overall scenario of the higher education and research perspective of India’s North East and Bangladesh and sought a unique concepts and guideline in enhancement of quality education and research in diverse disciplines. The Discussants pointed out different ideas focusing on the reality of education context of the regions and recommended for involvement of academicians as well as policy makers in standardization of education and research for future generation.                 

 

Mr. Mahbubul Hoque has made a statement in the Meet the Media at Sangskriti Bikash Kendra at Paribagh, Dhaka on 14 May 2016. He made an announcement to provide free education to 20 students of Bangladesh. The students can pursue free education either in the engineering college, RIST or in USTM, provided they should fulfill the criteria of being the highly meritorious students from poor background.
